“A seemingly idyllic, rarely seen American past comes to life like a fairy tale — some land before time, before film, before death.”

Patek Philippe: The International Magazine used images from the Karl Bodmer aquatints held in the rare book collections for an article in its July 2017 issue. The digital reproductions, especially crafted by Rare Books assistant Scott Beadles for this issue, illustrate “Home of the Braves,” by Elizabeth Daley.

“In the 1830s, when the American West was on the verge of momentous change, a German prince set off to explore the country and its people. He took with him a Swiss artist, whose intricate depictions are the last record [before photography] of a disappearing world.” Swiss-born artist Karl Bodmer accompanied Prince Maximilian zu Wied on his two-year journey across the American frontier, reaching as far west as Fort McKenzie, Montana.

The Rare Books Department holds a set of the eighty-one aquatints produced after watercolors by Bodmer for zu Wied’s Travels in the Interior of North America, first published in German in 1839 and later translated into English and French. Rare Books holds first editions of the German and of the English translation.

You can look at the digitized collection here:

In this digital format, you can also look at the first German and English editions of zu Wied’s Travels. Better than that, however, you can visit the Special Collections Reading Room and browse the lush, exquisitely detailed aquatints in their original state.

Hardly a romantic fairy tale, the history of indigenous peoples in the Americas is often tragic (they were not saved by a Prince) but always rich in its antiquity and its currency. Bodmer’s aquatints and zu Wied’s Travels are only part of a story worth exploring to your heart’s content in Special Collections.

Rare Books is pleased to announce the use of one of our Karl Bodmer aquatints as an image for an installation at the Center for Western Studies, Augustana University, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The image is part of an installation spanning three rooms. The Rare Books Bodmer image is in a section of the exhibit that discusses Lewis and Clark’s experiences with the Lakota and, in particular, the claim Joseph DeSomet Lewis that Meriwether Lewis was his father.

Mark your calendar for the fourth annual Book Collector’s Evening

March 25, 2014
6:00 PM
Alta Club 100 East South Temple

Join the University of Utah’s Friends of the J. Willard Marriott Library for an eventful evening including a display of rare books, a silent auction, and a presentation by well-known speaker, bibliophile and writer, Nicolas Basbanes. In his presentation,  “Fruits of a Gentle Madness,” Basbanes will use anecdotal, specific, up-to-the-minute examples to illustrate how great libraries and important research collections have relied on, over decades and to this day, the passion and eccentricities of the private collector.

The evening will provide an opportunity to share your book collecting adventures and favorite books with fellow aficionados.

Reservations: Please contact Judy Jarrow by March 20, 2014 at 801-581-3421 or judy.jarrow@utah.edu. $40 per person

Montana State Parks recently installed a new educational exhibit interpreting the life-ways and material culture of the Bitteroot Salish when Lewis and Clark encountered them in 1805. An image of “Indians Hunting the Bison,” a Karl Bodmer aquatint held in the rare book collections, was used as part of an interpretive banner for the exhibit. Vernon Carroll, interpretive specialist, Travelers Rest State Park, Lolo, Montana writes, “[The] image enhances the visitor’s experience.” Road trip!

Rare Books in Big Sky Journal

Big Sky Journal used an image from one of our aquatints for a two-page illustration of an article in their Fly Fishing 2013 issue.

Artist Karl Bodmer painted landscapes and portraits as he accompanied Prince Maximilian zu Wied on his expedition across the American West from 1832 to 1834.  His paintings were first published in 1843 in zu Wied’s chronicle of the journey.  Since that publication, Bodmer’s aquatints have remained a major source of information regarding Plains Indian culture. They were and continue to be instrumental in creating romantic perceptions and misconceptions about these peoples. The Rare Books Division holds a copy of the first edition of zu Weid’s chronicle. A complete set of our original aquatints may be viewed in digital format.

1812: A Nation Emerges

‘”1812: A Nation Emerges,” a bicentennial exhibition organized by the National Portrait Gallery, commemorates a crucial moment in American history.

Through the gathering of stunning portraits by masters such as Gilbert Stuart, and unique objects such as a red velvet dress that belonged to Dolley Madison and the Treaty of Ghent that ended the war, “1812” presents a spectacular history of the conflict and its effects through the lives of extraordinary people.

The war of 1812 may have been a small war, but it had great consequences for our nation.’
