Birds depicted include the Galapagos Penguin, Brown Pelican, Waved Albatross, Antarctic Whale-bird, Swallow-tailed Gull, and Galapagos Storm Petrel. Printed on dampened handmade Fabriano paper. Designed, illustrated, and printed by Ronald Keller. Cover art by Philip Warner. Bound in full tan cloth, partially painted in tan and gray to resemble breaking waves. The front pastedown is a cast paper sculpture of the rock and birds in flight. Edition of one hundred copies signed by the printer. University of Utah copy is number 98.

First edition, first printing in octavo of the Erasmus New Testament in Greek. This edition, in its compact format, was much more affordable than Froben’s earlier editions, two facts that arguably gave Erasmus’ translation greater societal impact. The text closely follows the Nikolaus Gergel edition of 1521, the second edition of the Erasmus Greek New Testament.

Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536) took monastic vows at the age of twenty-five. An independent scholar, he spent time at Cambridge where he befriended John Colet (1467-1519) and Thomas More (1478-1535) during a time of great stress in the English Church. He spent three years in Venice working as an editor in the publishing house of Aldus Manutius (1449-1515). He later worked with printer Johannes Froben (1460-1527) in Basel.

While in England, Erasmus began a systematic examination of available manuscript copies of the New Testament. His resulting Greek New Testament, with Latin in parallel column, was first published by Froben in 1516. The 1516 Greek-Latin New Testament was used as a primary source for Martin Luther’s translation of the New Testament into German (1522), and for William Tyndale’s translation of the New Testament into English (1526).

Although Erasmus was criticized by later scholars for not having used all available manuscript copies of the Greek New Testament and for not using Byzantine copies, his translation is noted as the first Western European attempt to find a truer translation of the New Testament than that of the fourth century Latin Vulgate, the translation used almost exclusively by the Roman Catholic Church. The translation re-introduced the study of Greek biblical manuscripts and other Greek works on the Bible into Western Europe.

This collection of Thomas More’s works includes the original Latin text of Utopia and is likely the fourth Latin printing of the work. It also includes History of Richard III, on which Shakespeare based his play, and a piece written during More’s imprisonment in the Tower of London.

Utopia, first printed in 1516, a satire on the administration of Henry VII, puts forward political and philosophical principles of a fictional ideal state. The literary form, most likely based on Plato’s “Republic,” was later adopted by Francis Bacon and Thomas Hobbes. The title has become a word synonymous with an optimistic but impractical social reform. The book addresses, among other social ills, religious intolerance, extreme punishment for crime, unjust taxation, and disparity of wealth between social classes. The protagonist, Raphael Hythloday, discovers “Utopia” when travelling with Amerigo Vespucci. In Utopia there is no war, no crime, and no poverty.

Thomas More refused to subscribe to a new oath required by the Act of Succession (1534). For this, he was cast into the London Tower, where he was kept, tried for treason nearly a year later, convicted and beheaded.

Take digital lettering to new depths during this three-day intensive with Spencer Charles, one of the rising stars of contemporary typographic design. Participants learn the tools and techniques to make a curvaceous catchword, magnificent monogram, pithy phrase, or dynamite drop cap. Output finished vector drawings to photopolymer plates and produce letterpress printed in limited editions. Printing experience is not necessary, but a working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator is strongly recommended.

Spencer Charles is a typographic designer and letterer residing in Brooklyn, New York. After graduating from the University of Utah, his interest in hand lettering developed as a chalkboard/signage artist for Whole Foods. In 2011, he moved to New York to work as Senior Designer at Louise Fili Ltd, a design studio specializing in logo, food package, and book design. He is currently working independently and is expanding into typeface design and illustration.
David Wolske is Assistant Librarian (Lecturer) and Creative Director for the Book Arts Program and Red Butte Press. He has taught design, typography, and letterpress printing at Indiana University, Herron School of Art & Design, the Center for Book & Paper Arts at Columbia College Chicago, The Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum, and The University of Utah. David’s letterpress work is featured in multiple design and letterpress publications. He holds awards from the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Type Director’s Club, and the Society of Typographic Arts.

Congratulations to Dr. Gregory Thompson, Associate Dean for Special Collections at the J. Willard Marriott Library for receiving the Life-Time Achievement Award from the Conference of Inter-Mountain Archivists (CIMA) for 2015. The award is given annually to individuals who have demonstrated considerable service and leadership in the Intermountain West, and who have made significant contributions to the CIMA organization and/or the archival profession. The CIMA Life-Time Achievement Award recognizes the work of an entire career, spanning the course of several years. The award was bestowed at the CIMA 2015 Western Roundup in Denver, Colorado (May 27-30).

The award states, “Gregory C. Thompson’s years as Associate Dean for Special Collections at the J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah, have been a shining beacon in our profession’s efforts to preserve history for researchers of today and tomorrow.

Undoubtedly, his efforts will ensure that countless stories from the historical record will be saved, and will have a chance to be forwarded to generations to come…[his] work having been recognized on the state, regional, and national level has brought prestige and gravitas to the archival profession in the inter-mountain region.”

Well put! Dr. Thompson’s work has also brought prestige and gravitas to the J. Willard Marriott Library and The University of Utah. Rare Books is proud to call him “boss.”

Steve Miller was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin and educated at The University of Wisconsin-Madison. Having taken letterpress printing classes with Walter Hamady of The Perishable Press, he founded Red Ozier Press in 1976—a fine press devoted to publishing literary first editions in handmade limited editions.
Steve came to The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 1988. He teaches letterpress printing, hand papermaking, and coordinates the MFA in the Book Arts Program. Although his primary focus at the university is in the teaching of traditional bookmaking, he is also the proprietor of Red Hydra Press and collaborates on various limited edition publishing projects with authors and artists. Steve is a co-director of Paper and Book Intensive, a nationally-recognized annual series of summer workshops in the book arts. He is also a trustee of the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina and co-directs the University of Alabama Center for Cuba Collaboration and Scholarship. Steve was awarded the 2012 Distinguished Career Award from the College Book Art Association (CBAA)

“The first time I read Bly’s poem Singing Late at Night at Chuck and Phil’s Farm, I saw a thunderous tornado sweeping across the fields, and poem lines swirling from it. No matter how hard I tried to rid myself of the image, it stayed. And so I made the reduction linocut with words swirled in photopolymer types around it. The words all come from several of Bly’s poems in his book Iron John, and one of his translations of Kabir in the same book. What I saw in Singing Late at Night…unleashed a riff of Bly words for me.” – Steve Miller

Richard-Gabriel Rummonds is recognized as one of the world’s pre-eminent handpress printers of the late twentieth century. For nearly twenty-five years, using the imprints of Plain Wrapper Press and Ex Ophidia, he printed and published illustrated limited editions of contemporary literature on iron handpresses, primarily in Verona, Italy and Cottondale, Alabama. Rummonds’ work has been exhibited in Rome, New York, and San Francisco. In 1999, a retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Biblioteca di via Senato in Milan, Italy. His books are held in museums, libraries and private collections worldwide.

Rummonds was appointed founding director of the MFA in the Book Arts Program at the University of Alabama in 1984. He has taught workshops around the world, including the University of Utah.

Fantasies & Hard Knocks, “embellished with over 450 images [most in color] and 65 recipes,” is a candid autobiography chronicling the printing and publishing of Rummonds’ pieces issued with Plain Wrapper Press and Ex Ophidia imprints.

In 1966, Rummonds founded Plain Wrapper Press in Quito, Ecuador, moving it to Verona, Italy in 1970, where he mastered his craft on nineteenth-century handpresses and established a worldwide reputation for excellent fine press productions. In 1982, Rummonds established Ex Ophidia in Cottondale, Alabama.

His memoir is filled with deeply personal anecdotes of working closely with many of the most acclaimed and renowned authors and artists of the time, including Jorge Luis Borges, Anthony Burgess, Italo Calvino, C. F. Cavafy, John Cheever, Brendan Gill, Dana Gioia, Jack Spicer, Paul Zweig, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Fulvio Testa, R. B. Kitaj and others.
