The Special Collections exhibition, “Here and Over There: The Great War, 1914-1918,” was featured in an article in the Daily Utah Chronicle, the University of Utah’s student newspaper.

WWI Exhibit Revels in History at the Library

Margaret Keller, a visitor at the exhibit, came because of her family’s ties to the military.

“My father served in WWI, my husband in WWII, and my great-grandson in Afghanistan,” she said. “As a military family, I think it’s important to revel in these experiences.”

The exhibition is on display through Sunday, December 7, in the Special Collections Gallery and the Special Collections Reading Room, Level 4, J. Willard Marriott Library.

Artists’ Book Cornucopia is an annual exhibition held at Abecedarian Gallery in Denver, Colorado each spring. Luise Poulton, Managing Curator, Rare Books, Special Collections, J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah was the juror for this year’s exhibition.

“For Artists’ Book Cornucopia V, I looked for diversity of format, material and subject matter. I wanted a vision of the enormity and complexity of communication that can happen in books, old and new. Old formats restructured as new forms. Old texts remade and replete with new meanings. New or unusual materials combined with expected materials to push the notion of communication: tactility heightened, strengthening the experience of the message.”

Join students of Professor Lance Olsen’s fiction workshop (ENGL5510) as they present their short stories during a public reading.

One of the pieces being introduced will feature an illustration from Andreas Vesalius’ famous book of anatomy, De Humani Corporis Fabrica. The short story, inspired by Vesalius’ revolutionary depictions of the female anatomy, addresses the often taboo topic of female sexuality. Lyuba Basin, Rare Books student assistant, used our copy of the 1555 edition of De Humani Corporis Fabrica as reference for her work, specifically focusing on the wonderfully detailed illustration of the dissected female body.

Willard Marriott Library for an eventful evening including a display of rare books, a silent auction, and a presentation by well-known speaker, bibliophile and writer, Nicolas Basbanes. In his presentation, “Fruits of a Gentle Madness,” Basbanes will use anecdotal, specific, up-to-the-minute examples to illustrate how great libraries and important research collections have relied on, over decades and to this day, the passion and eccentricities of the private collector.

The evening will provide an opportunity to share your book collecting adventures and favorite books with fellow aficionados.

The Legacy of Ed Abbey on Access Utah

Luise Poulton, Managing Curator of Rare Books at the J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah, joined Bob Lippman, (retired) environmental lawyer, activist and educator; Ken Sanders from Ken Sanders Rare Books in Salt Lake City; and filmmaker ML Lincoln on Utah Public Radio’s Access Utah.

The group discussed Edward Abbey’s political philosophies, rooted in traditions of anarchism and civil disobedience; the rise of Earth First! out of Abbey’s writings; and “monkeywrenching” today, including Abbey’s influence on activists like Tim DeChristopher. A screening of ML Lincoln’s new film about Abbey and his legacy,“Wrenched,” shows in Salt Lake City on March 6th and an Abbey retrospective takes place in Moab on March 14th and 15th.

An image from our first edition copy of Washington Irving’s Astoria (1836) was used for an Outside Online post: An excerpt from a new book about the legendary Overland Party attempts to establish America’s first commercial colony on the wild and unclaimed Northwest coast. The book, Astoria: John Jacob Astor and Thomas Jefferson’s Lost Pacific Empire, a Story of Wealth, Ambition, and Survival by Peter Stark was released this month from HarperCollins. The image was also used in the book.

Artists’ Book Cornucopia is an annual juried exhibition held at Abecedarian Gallery each spring. The exhibition is open to any form of artists’ publication with the exception of self-published on-demand bookworks.

Regardless of the juror’s decision, all submissions are reviewed by gallery staff with an eye towards inclusion in future curated and invitational exhibitions.
